PhaukPhaw Relation/

Myanmar-China Bilateral Relations

Myanmar and China share a long-standing relationship as neighboring countries, characterized by deep-rooted cooperation and mutual respect. Over centuries, both countries have cultivated strong ties based on kinship, strategic partnership, and a shared vision for the future. These relations are firmly anchored in the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which serve as the guiding framework for their diplomatic engagements.

Myanmar was among the first countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, demonstrating its commitment to fostering strong diplomatic relations with its neighbor. Formal diplomatic ties were established on 8th June 1950, marking the beginning of an enduring partnership distinguished by regular high-level exchanges and mutual cooperation.

A significant milestone in Myanmar-China relations was the adoption of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which were jointly issued following the visit of Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in June 1954. These principles facilitated the resolution of bilateral border issues, culminating in the successful signing of boundary agreements in 1960. This achievement was made possible through the mutual respect, understanding, and long-term vision of both nations’ leadership.

Bound by geographical proximity and historical ties, the people of Myanmar and China have maintained friendly relations for generations. . Reflecting the deep fraternal bond between the two countries, the bilateral relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in 2011, signifying a new phase of collaboration in trade, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchanges. This partnership embodies the spirit of Pauk-Phaw, “siblings” in Myanmar, which aptly captures the close and brotherly relations between the two countries. Key initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor provide critical platforms for economic and strategic cooperation, fostering mutual development and prosperity.

Myanmar and China continue to strengthen their collaboration in regional and international affairs, offering mutual support to safeguard their respective national interests. The steady enhancement of trust and cooperation across various sectors underscores the resilience and depth of their bilateral relations.
Myanmar places great importance on its relationship with China, firmly adheres to the One-China principle, and actively supports China’s Belt and Road Initiative, along with its three major global initiatives and the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1950, the friendship between the two nations has continued to strengthen, culminating in a comprehensive strategic partnership that remains dynamic and ever-expanding. This enduring and evolving relationship stands as a testament to the strong and cooperative ties between Myanmar and China.
